What is hyaluronic acid? Blog post by Jordan

Hyaluronic Acid is a trending buzz word in the skincare world currently, but don’t let its tricky name fool you. Unlike other acids, Hyaluronic Acid is not an exfoliator. This powerful acid naturally pulls water to the skin to retain moisture. Hyaluronic acid is found in many products on the market, both topical and injectable. Scientific studies have shown that Hyaluronic Acid helps improve skin hydration and production of collagen, fight free radicals, maintain skin elasticity, and it even has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help with wound healing.

Topical Hyaluronic Acid has the ability to rapidly penetrate the skin to pull water to the surface, making your skin plumper, smoother, and more vibrant. The benefits of Hyaluronic Acid are best achieved when used twice a day. There are many Hyaluronic Acid products on the market; one of my favorites is Skinceutical’s HA Intensifier. This product is suitable for all skin types, including acne prone skin and rosacea.

Ever wondered what the main ingredient in most dermal fillers is?  Yep, Hyaluronic Acid. Most fillers (ex: Restylane and Juvederm) on the market today are made up of Hyaluronic Acid, making it very safe to be injected into the skin. Hyaluronic Acid is naturally found in your body, meaning your body will not see HA fillers as a foreign object. When injected into the skin, it has the ability to create

volume and fullness. Since your body naturally breaks down Hyaluronic Acid, fillers tend to last about 6-12 months depending on where it is placed. Many wonder the risk with dermal fillers, since HA is naturally found in your body there is a very low chance of reaction to the filler itself. Please be aware that not all fillers are made up of Hyaluronic Acid, so discuss with Dr. Nimtz or our expert injectors on what is being used the day of treatment.
