Laser Skin Resurfacing

Women and men of all ages enjoy having smooth, clear, evenly colored skin. Normal sun exposure, hormones, the natural aging process, and other factors can take a toll on even the healthiest skin. At Commonwealth Plastic Surgery, Dr. Jared Nimtz offers advanced laser skin resurfacing treatments in Lexington and London, KY, personalized to the concerns and available downtime of each patient.

What Are the Benefits of Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing may be performed on most areas of exposed skin including the face, chest, back, and arms.  Both women and men choose these treatments to correct a variety of concerns including:

  • Wrinkles, thinning skin, and other signs of aging
  • Superficial scarring such as acne scars and stretch marks
  • Sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and other blemishes on the skin
  • Redness, rosacea, and enlarged capillaries

With several types of skin resurfacing technology available including IPL, Cutera®, and Fotona4D®, we can easily achieve each patient’s cosmetic goals. We also offer a range of chemical peels for patients interested in this treatment option.

How Does It Work?

Laser skin resurfacing treats the upper layers of the skin to target excess pigment, redness, wrinkles, uneven texture, and other concerns.

  • Ablative lasers such as our Cutera laser remove the outer layer of damaged skin to reveal the underlying new skin, which is smoother, softer, clearer, and younger looking. These treatments can be adjusted to various depths ranging from superficial to deep. The laser energy also stimulates collagen growth deep within the skin, thereby improving the skin’s structure and elasticity.
  • Non-ablative options such as IPL and Fotona4D penetrate the skin without affecting its surface to provide clearer, smoother, firmer skin more gradually than with ablative lasers.

Dr. Nimtz carefully controls the level of energy emitted to precisely remove the old skin with minimal damage to other tissue.

How Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Performed?

We perform skin resurfacing in our office. First your face will be cleansed thoroughly, a local anesthetic will be applied and then washed off once the skin is numb. The laser device is smoothed over the targeted skin, where its energy is released in quick pulses. Treatments take from approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the condition of your skin, number of target areas, and your treatment goals. After a laser resurfacing treatment, you will need to apply ointment to your treated skin for about a week. You may have to wear a bandage to cover your skin for the first few days.
