The breast implant “drop and fluff” process is the gradual shift from early post-op tightness to a softer, more natural-looking result. Right after breast augmentation surgery, implants often look high on the chest because swelling and muscle tension are still present.
Over the next several weeks and months, the implants settle (“drop”) and the breast shape relaxes and rounds out (“fluff”).

Drop and Fluff Progression Week by Week
Your exact timeline can vary, but think of this as a general guide:
- Week 1: Highest/tightest phase; upper fullness is common.
- Weeks 2 to 4: Swelling begins to ease; implants start settling gradually.
- Weeks 4 to 8: Noticeable improvement in shape and softness for many patients.
- Months 3 to 6: Often the point when the results look and feel more “final.”
- Up to 12 months: Subtle settling can continue, especially with under-muscle implant placement.
What Affects Your Recovery Timeline
Your drop-and-fluff progression depends on implant type and size, implant placement (over vs. under the muscle), skin elasticity, and how your tissues heal. Following your post-op instructions closely, especially around activity, support garments, and follow-up visits, helps your recovery stay on track.
